Brat named Philly's Best Inexpensive Alternative Theater

Philly Weekly 2/24/10

The 2/24/10 issue of Philadelphia Weekly singled out Brat as Philadelphia's "Best Inexpensive Alternative Theater." Check out the article here, which also includes shout-outs to Maukingbird ("Best Gay Theater"), Philadelphia Theatre Company ("Best Secret Theater Deals for Students") and InterAct ("Best Power-to-the-People Theater").

Let's do the math. Most theatre in Philly averages between $30-$60 per ticket. This is what $60 would get you with Brat: 24 hours of The Bald Soprano, plus free beer, coffee and a raucous lobby cabaret; a trip to south Philly and a macabre freak-out with Haunted Poe; an intimate evening at Fergie's Pub with a free pint and a one-man performance of Beowulf; and 6 episodes of Microwave Mambo!, downloaded to your iPod. ALL FOR $60!!

Keeping ticket prices low is so important to Brat, it’s in our mission statement. Producing shows isn't cheap (and our work shouldn't be seen as such), but we get a lot of help from foundations, individual donors and our board…as well as food and drink sponsors who help bring the party. Anyone who’s ever worked on a Brat show knows that it’s a labor of love—for the art, the camaraderie, the DIY vibe—that transcends economics. It’d be great to make more money, but there’s a certain reward in just being able to make adventurous and fun theatre that can be shared with so many people.

Finally, if you've followed Brat in the past few years, you'll know that we do shows all over the city. Since 2006 we have performed in 12 different spaces! Part of what makes us "alternative" is the idea that not all theatre needs to be seen in the same building, that different spaces can bring a different crowd and a different vibe. We want audiences to say about a Brat show, "where are we going this time?" — and, perhaps more importantly,  "where are they gonna take us this time?"
