Theater outside the proseneum
Since 1996: theatre that breaks the rules, theatre that tests conventions, theatre that rocks! Brat is committed to “thinking outside the proscenium” with performance pieces that are surprising and incendiary, entertaining and unsettling. We create new work and re-envisioned classics, collaborate with established and emerging artists, produce shows in non-traditional venues, and reach out to everyone by keeping ticket prices low.
Brat received big ink from Philadelphia Citypaper, as the cast of A 24-Hour The Bald Soprano landed on the cover of the weekly newspaper. The shoot—with the cast decked out in designer Julia Poiesz's makeup, wigs and costumes—took place in the vacant, trash-strewn lot behind Brat's rehearsal space in south Philly. The temperature was 25 degrees. Photog Neal Santos, with the assistance of Senior Editor Patrick Rapa, Art Director Reseca Peskin and two others, set up lights and camera. Producing Artistic Director Michael Alltop set a pile of Citypaper issues on fire inside the newsbox. As the paint began to bubble and fume, director Madi Distefano called out poses—and the actors mugged until nothing but cinders remained.
