Theater outside the proseneum
Since 1996: theatre that breaks the rules, theatre that tests conventions, theatre that rocks! Brat is committed to “thinking outside the proscenium” with performance pieces that are surprising and incendiary, entertaining and unsettling. We create new work and re-envisioned classics, collaborate with established and emerging artists, produce shows in non-traditional venues, and reach out to everyone by keeping ticket prices low.
It seems fitting. If you want to know what people REALLY think of the show, just linger where the comings and goings are goings-on. Our eyes and ears into the front lines, the first out, first impression of Haunted Poe, our man on the street has got to be Kevin Gallagher: Door Guy. We asked Kevin a few questions- questions we thought you, dear readers, would perhaps ask him yourself were you to take a moment. Dear readers, we have taken that moment. Behold. Does working the door ever get boring? It's not boring at all! When you're working on a show like this, people have questions before they enter, and most want to talk more about the experience on their way out (and I have no problem talking!!). Could have done without the rainy nights though! How's the Fright Factory Crowd? The Fright Factory crowd is younger, generally. Most have been cool, some a little inquisitive. When they ask about the show and I explain, they ask about Poe. Hopefully it gets some more people to read about him and come to the production. Can you share some interesting audience reactions or anecdotes from doing security? The audience reactions have been amazing. I often tell the actors and the production crew I wish they could be out there with me because that is where the people really open up - from the big fans of Poe who are excited about what they have seen dramatized, to the others who just want a taste of Halloween madness! I had an older gentleman one night tell me that this was the most incredible Halloween experience of his life. I really do want the entire staff to know the positive reactions I hear time after time each night! What's your favorite room in the show? Each room (like Poe's writing) has its own haunting beauty. Each actor is uniquely talented and puts so much energy into each performance— I honestly don't know how they do it 20+ times a night. Talk about rock n'roll theater. I have to say I was really impressed by the intensity of The Raven room performance. My wife is a librarian and I think she is planning to redecorate with book-wallpaper now...! The sense of doom during the Masque of the Red Death, the hellish visions and heavenly voices of the cemetery scene, all amazing. Oh, and there's even a puppet show for the kids. Rock on, Poe!
